H.M.N.L. Handagiripathira

Deputy Director – Life Sciences

H.M.N.L. Handagiripathira, graduated from the University of Kelaniya specializing Chemistry in her four year degree in 1999 with a Second Upper Class. She worked as an assistant lecturer at the Department of Chemistry of University of Kelaniya since year 2000. Then she was recruited as a Scientific Officer attached to the Nuclear Analytical Testing Section of the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Authority in March 2001. She obtained her Master Degree in Nuclear Science from the University of Colombo in 2007. She has been appointed as the Deputy Director of Life Sciences Division of the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board (SLAEB) since July 2016. At present, she is following her second postgraduate advanced research degree from the University of Kelaniya, on environmental chemistry. She has also been awarded with Fellowship training on Radiochemistry at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Karlsruhe in Germany. Additionally, she gained technical knowledge and research experience on the use of Nuclear Science and Technology through the participation in training courses and workshops organized by IAEA.

She has more than 16 years of service continuously at the Nuclear Analytical Testing (NAT) Section and the Life Sciences Division which was prolonged from NAT section. She has made a great contribution towards the success of her Section and later the Division as well as the Institute. During her career in the institute, she has been a member and a project counterpart of many Technical Co-operation (TC) projects, supported by the IAEA. She has also been functioning as National Project Coordinator (NPC) for number of Regional Projects conducted under the Regional Co-operative Agreements (RCA) in the Asia-Pacific region. She also functioned as Chief Investigator of several Coordinated Research Programmes (CRPs) assisted by IAEA.

She has been playing an important role in the development of nuclear analytical testing programmes for research and development activities and customer oriented services. She has assisted in her fully capacity to establish several laboratory facilities such as X-ray analytical facility, Alpha-Beta and Gamma spectrometric facilities, and Radiochemical analysis facilities in her Section and later the Division. She has also contributed to several scientific publications which addressed national issues and interests.

She has played major role in the establishment of accreditation statues compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 in the Institute for the first time. She served as the Deputy Quality Manager of the Nuclear Analytical Laboratories of SLAEB since 2006 and presently she is playing a leading role as the cooperate Quality Manager of the SLAEB.
